#060 GAD BA3 - P1: Maya Design

Carrying on with my design, this next section focuses on creating the door, the bolts that lock the door, and linking some of the pieces together. I've decided that I will do a small animation, so some of the pieces will not be fitted together, allowing me to animate them at a later date.

Step 1: Create a large cylinder, 17.5 units by 17.5 units and 2 units deep.
Step 2: Clean the top and bottom surface.
Step 3: Create another cylinder, this time 17.9 units by 17.9 units and 1 unit deep.
Step 4: Again, clean up the edges on the top and bottom of the cylinder.
Step 5: Lower the second cylinder into the middle of the original one.
Step 6: Select the two faces and use Boolean Union.
Step 7: Copy the other pieces and place them on the top face of the cylinder.
Step 8: Create a new cylinder 0.6 units by 0.6 units and clean up the faces.
Step 9: Rotate the cylinder by 90 degrees.
Step 10: Lengthen the cylinder to 5 units long.
Step 11: Select the rotate tool.
Step 12: Press Insert and position the axis to the centre of the door.
Step 13: Set the rotate tool to rotate in 60 degree increments.
Step 14: Rotate the objects by 60 degrees (To match up with the sliding bolts)
Step 15: Do this another 4 times to complete the door.
Step 16: Select all the bolt pieces and combine them, then press CTRL + C to copy them.
Step 17: Press CTRL + V, and position the second set of bolt pieces above the door.
Step 18: Select the lower lock pieces and use Boolean Difference.
Step 19: The Boolean Difference should cut 6 cylinders into the door.
Step 19: Select the bolt pieces.
Step 20: Separate the bolt pieces.
Step 21: Select the bolt sliders and position them so they are inside the bolt receivers.
Step 22: Do this for all 6 bolt sliders.
Step 23: Select all the bolt pieces.
Step 24: Lower them back into position in the middle of the door.
Step 25: Select one bolt piece and the bolt slider above it.
Step 26: Combine the two objects.
Step 27: Now, when the bolt slider is positioned into the bolt receiver, the main bolt will slide out with it.
Step 28: Select the upper sections of the door, except the bolt pieces and combine them.
Step 29: Select the upper and lower section of the door and use Boolean Union.

By using Boolean Union and Combine, its allowed me to create a cleaner object in a much faster time. Looking inside the object, there are no double faces or indeed any faces in the internal structure that are unessential. I've kept the bolt pieces separate so I can animate them at a later date.
